Raka Panda
About the Artist
Raka Panda is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ahmedabad, originally from a small town in West Bengal. Her practice interweaves drawing, installation, printmaking, and textile-based work to explore themes of displacement, memory, and cultural duality. Trained in painting at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, her work is rooted in a rich visual and literary tradition, yet speaks through contemporary forms and personal narratives.Raka’s work often delves into the emotional layers of migration, the tactile language of daily life, and the psychological spaces between comfort and alienation. She draws from Bengali folk aesthetics, miniature painting, literature, and lived experiences—blending them with collected objects, textiles, digital media, and layered mark-making.
In her current project "Amongst Them: A Question of Belonging", she turns an introspective lens toward the idea of “crowd” and collective identity. Through an immersive, room-like installation and intricate drawings on found fabrics, Raka examines her own existence within the masses—posing questions about who we are when we stand together, and who we remain when we stand alone.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she has been awarded fellowships and grants from prestigious institutions including The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and the Ministry of Culture, India. She continues to evolve her practice through experimentation, community collaboration, and a deep engagement with personal memory.
